Woodland Park

Woodland Park -1

Interior work for an architectural firm in Woodland Park, NJ

Lighting - Slow shutter (1/10) on a tripod to get the ambient light and used my ringlight to give a little pop. I never used the ring for interiors, and I had to add 3-stops, but I like it for quick interior work. You don't get the hotspots on the ceiling or harsh shadows around light fixtures like bounced flash.

Lightsource

Lightsource is a great photo podcast that deals with studio lighting by interviewing some of the best studio photographers in the business. I always learn something even after 90 episodes. It's the only photo podcast that I HAVE to listen to as soon as there is a new one.

Family Portrait '09

I lugged two strobes, stands, and umbrellas for this shot. Thanks to our friend Kim for taking it (otherwise, I would have had to lug up my tripod too)

Strobist - SB600 camera right with a shoot thru umbrella and an SB900 with the same on the left. I brought up two shopping bags with me and filled them with rocks to weigh down the light stands. Unfortunately one of them fell anyway and, of course, it was the expensive SB900!! It survived, though I'm thinking of making a flash case like the one for my iphone, to absorb some of the impact.

SB900 with Orbitz ring light on axis

I wish I added a stop to the ring light and dropped the other two a little, to avoid the blown out facial highlights....I also should have added another CTO gels at least to the rim lights.

I didn't even get a marshmallow after all this, they were all eaten when I was done....struggling for one's art :)

Dining Room & Morning Light

Dining Room & Morning Light

I've tried to shoot my dining room before and it just doesn't work as a whole room, sometimes half the room shows enough to get the point across. I also have a bag of 8-watt bulbs that work great for interiors since you can use a slow shutter without blowing out the lights...but I couldn't find them so I shot it at 1/100 which was ok since it was bright out and the light was pouring in anyway.

Strobist - Main light was the sun, camera right, and I used the Orbits ringlight and my SB900 for fill. I think I should have accentuated the sun with a strobe and unbrella for more dramatic lighting....maybe next time.

I exposed for the sky and underexposed half a stop to darken the background so my niece would pop out.

Nikon D300 with 50mm 1.8 lens set to 1/200 at F2. SB900 with Lumiquest III small softbox behind and above subject. I pointed it more towards the camera to get the falloff in the background. I also use a boom cymbal stand with a swivel holder as a poor man's c-stand with an SB600 and Orbits Ringflash on axis for fill. Finally, a little tinfoil on the table in front for more fill and umph (technical term).
